Artist Statement

I, Ellen Carranza, am an artist with a passion for etching and printmaking. My sources of influence are my parents, both of them have an incredible artistic and creative ability. My dad is an architect by profession and my mom is a fashion designer.

I majored in illustration at School of Visual Arts because I was exploring opportunities in creating children’s books. Through various courses I took, in printmaking techniques, I discovered that my forte was in etching, mono-prints and lithography. I especially enjoy the etching (intaglio) technique because it allows me to use various textures, linear work, and colors all on one plate or print (a la poupee). I have had the opportunity to exhibit my work in New York City art galleries.

Most of my work depicts elements in nature. I use animal imagery frequently because when I draw them I feel like they are immortal and “they can live forever”. My signature work often depicts the world from my perspective of an animal, symbolizing the human condition and its relation to nature, time and global crisis.
